Variety: Pinot Grigio
Region/G.I.: Hunter Valley, Hunter
Vintage: 2013
Colour: Grey with pink hues
Alcohol: 12.0%
Bouquet: Grapefruit and hints of guava
Flavour: Heavier than expected with lots of ripe peach and some citrus secondary flavours. Nice, crisp and refreshing.
Points: (3+7+11+6+7+50) 84
Notes: In style, more Pinot Gris than Pinot Grigio but a delight nevertheless. The last of the Pinot Grigio case I bought at the start of the summer. $14.80~290 Kc.

Margan Wines 2013 Rose

Variety: Shiraz
Region/G.I.: Hunter Valley
Vintage: 2013
Colour: Rich salmon to almost cherry
Alcohol: 13.0%
Bouquet: Another creamy bouquet with sweet fruit like raspberry
Flavour: Very nice, savoury flavours with almost a sparkling touch on the front of the tongue. The savoury flavours are almost like burnt caramel.
Points: (3+7+11+6+7+50) 84
Notes: This was my contribution to the rose tasting. To be fair, the Sangiovese roses were better and from my experience tends to be the better grape for interesting and enjoyable roses made locally.

GeorgeTown Vineyard 2011 Rose

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Central Otago
Vintage: 2011
Colour: Pale salmon
Alcohol: 13.5%
Bouquet: Creamy aromas, musk lollies (sweets) and slate
Flavour: Very smokey, peat and some charcoal. Very dry. Savoury without fruit. Complex and interesting
Points: (3+7+11+7+7+50) 85
Notes: This was a very interesting wine as it tasted very different to the other Roses. I wasn't sure I liked it first time around but it grew on me thanks to its complexity. Others weren't so fond of it.

Variety: Sangiovese
Region/G.I.: Canberra District

Colour: Salmon
Alcohol: 11.5%
Bouquet: Creamy strawberry lollies (sweets)

Lethbirdge 2010 Mietta

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region/G.I.: Port Phillip, Geelong
Vintage: 2010
Colour: Dark purple
Alcohol: ?%
Bouquet: Gunshot, flint and red berries piercing the nose
Flavour: Surprisingly light bodied given the nose. Fruit is foremost in the flavour profile although its acidity is a classy addition. Much simpler in taste than nose suggests.
Points: (3+8+11+7+6+50) 85
Notes: Another wine with a lot of hype but I preferred the mid-tier offered on the night. This was is about $85 retail.

Villa Maria 2010 Southern Clays Pinot Noir

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Marlborough, NZ
Vintage: 2010
Colour: Dark purple with a brown hue
Alcohol: ?%
Bouquet: Brambly aromas of both old as well as just cut twigs as well as some heavy, blackcurrant fruit in the nose
Flavour: Quite fruity in the flavour (more than I would like), with some pepper and fruit according to the nose. A nice peppery finish as well. Definitely concentrated flavours.
Points: (3+8+11+7+6+50) 85
Notes: While enjoyable in its own right, it is not a Pinot experience that I expected. In my view it was surpassed by some of the other wines on the night.

Paringa Estate 2010 Estate Pinot Noir

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region/G.I.: Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Vintage: 2010
Colour: Garnet
Alcohol: 14.5%
Bouquet: Savoury, more like brambly aromas in the nose with some just ripe cherry hints
Flavour: A savoury style of Pinot with greater emphasis on the herbs and mushroom flavours, some gentle tannin with a gentle kick at the end, while having remnants of cherry fruit flavour in the distance. Lovely and complex.
Points: (3+7+12+7+8+50) 87
Notes: I was a big fan of this wine at the tasting. The complexity was great and I liked the style which was more to my palate. The only hiccup is the price... $60 retail.

Houghton 2011 The Bandit

Same notes from tasting one month ago. Nice accompaniment for goat stew that I made for dinner.

Pooley 2012 Coal River Pinot Noir

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region/G.I.: Tasmania
Vintage: 2012
Colour: Dark purple
Alcohol: 14.0%
Bouquet: Restrained. Not much in the nose.
Flavour: A lick of plum, almost povidla/plum concentrate. Hints of white pepper. A bit short.
Points: (3+6+11+6+7+50) 83
Notes: Disappointing as I bought 6 of these late last year having visited the winery last year and enjoyed their range. I am hoping that if it is opened longer, there is more to enjoy. I bought them at $36 each and they retail at about $44.

Spring Vale 2010 Pinot Noir

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region/G.I.: Tasmania
Vintage: 2010
Colour: Dark brown with a hint of brown
Alcohol: ?
Bouquet: Again, very mild wet cow and some regular cherry in the nose.
Flavour: Rich flavour of plum and almost liquorice flavours as well lovely, flakey tannins. Excellent balance. Elegant. Complex. Rich without being over done.
Points: (3+7+13+8+8+50) 89
Notes: The winner for me of the tasting. About $40.

Josef Chromy Wines 2011 Pinot Noir

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region/G.I.: Tasmania
Vintage: 2011
Colour: Purple/brown
Alcohol: ?
Bouquet: Mild wet cow in the nose with hints of sour cherry
Flavour: Fantastic length stands out. Blueberry, sour cherry and even hints of black pepper in the profile which is well integrated. Much complexity to enjoy.
Points: (3+7+12+8+8+50) 88
Notes: I thought this was second best of our tasting. It costs about $33 which is the mid range offering from this producer, whose basic level is called Pepik and high end is called Zdar.

St Clair 2012 Pinot Noir

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Marlborough, NZ
Vintage: 2012
Colour: Cherry red
Alcohol: ?
Bouquet: Earthy nose of dry earth which has just received light rain
Flavour: Not particularly complex. The mulberry fruit flavours were slightly gluggy but the tannins present compensated and brought balance. Full and gentle.
Points: (3+7+11+6+7+50) 84
Notes: The third wine tasted. $19 and probably the cheapest wine of the selection of nine presented. Solid although slightly fruitier than I prefer.

Geoff Hardy Wines 2012 K1 Pinot Noir

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region/G.I.: Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Vintage: 2012
Colour: Purple/dark brown
Alcohol: ?
Bouquet: Fresh cut twigs, younger brambly tones
Flavour: Ripe plums and hints of pepper and other heavy Indian spices. Good length and the existence of tannins. Tasty but not recognisable as a Pinot Noir if tasted blind
Points: (3+7+11+7+7+50) 84
Notes: Apparently $35 from the winery. As a whole it was a pleasant drink although not recognisable as Pinot Noir and it was our second in the tasting of nine so our taste buds were still sharp.

Medhurst 2012 Pinot Noir

Variety: Pinot Noir
Region/G.I.: Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Vintage: 2012
Colour: Purple/brown
Alcohol: ?
Bouquet: Rotting old wood posts and concentrated cherry
Flavour: Straight forward, sour cherry flavours but I found it a little sour
Points: (3+7+10+6+6+50) 82
Notes: Apparently $36 from the winery. This was one of the weakest of the wines we tasted on the night.

Westend Estate 2012 Private Bin Pinot Bianco

Variety: Pinot Blanc
Region/G.I.: Big Rivers, Riverina
Vintage: 2012
Colour: Yellow/Apple Green
Alcohol: 13.0%
Bouquet: Honey dew melon with hints of lemon
Flavour: Very tasty. Medium bodied with fruit flavours according to the nose. It finishes nicely with some mineral/nice sourness.
Points: (3+7+11+7+7+50) 85
Notes: This is the best wine I've tasted from this producer and I've tried a few. See here, here,  here. Pinot Blanc is not common here but this producer is trying many new varieties, and in this case is successful.

Scotchman's Hill 2011 Ben O'Donoghue Pinot Gris

Variety: Pinot Gris
Region: Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Vintage: 2011
Colour: Steel grey/lime/green
Alcohol: 13.5%
Bouquet: Strong aromas of furry peach skins and ripe apricot
Flavour: Pear flavoured according to the nose with good mineral ending which is unusual for an Australian wine. Nice and even, this is medium bodied held together nicely with a long finish.
Points: 86 (4+7+11+7+7+50)
Notes: Part of the Pinot Gris collection I bought earlier this year. This is probably the pick of the bunch from a region which I find to be generally over-rated. $14.85 ~296 Kc.
